Cabin Top Cover

This page describes:
  1. How I added a Cabin Top Cover.
My boat came equipped with a Pop Top and a pop-top canvas cover. So I used the existing snaps locations on the boat from the pop-top to attach my new cover. I started out by sewing two lengths of Sunbrella together. This seam will run for and aft down the center of the finished cover. Then I positioned this over the boat and marked where each snap on the boat matched up with the cover. I also cut out for the mast. I then took the cover home and finished sewing the side edges and mast cut-out so that the finished edge would be one inch beyond the snap locations. Then I brought the cover back to the boat and one by one installed each snap. Make sure the cover remains centered over the boat while installing the snaps. Snap each new snap to the boat after it is attached to help keep the cover aligned while locating the remaining snaps. It was all pretty easy once I got started. Then I took the cover home again and sewed the aft edge with a piece of bungee stretched slightly inside the edge. The bungee helps keep this aft edge tight. I already had a separate cover for the hatch boards. The top edge of the hatch board cover snaps into snaps on top of the sliding hatch teak rails and fits under the new cover.
  2. Where I purchased the materials necessary.
I bought the Sunbrella material on eBay for about $7.50 per yard. I think I bought ten yards which was enough for the cabin cover and a new main sail cover with a small amount left over. The snap hardware was from West Marine in a kit which included the tool for fastening the snaps to the fabric.
