Jib Halyard Downhaul (continuous loop)

This page describes:
  1. How I added a continuous loop jib halyard downhaul.
This upgrade was performed by myself. I put an eye splice on one end of an 80 foot piece of 1/4" Sta-Set double braid line. I attached a shackle through the eye splice. The line was then run through the mast head from front to back and down to the deck. From there it runs through a turning block (pulley) attached to a plate at the base of the mast (port side), through a deck organizer (located forward of the port side hand rail) then back to a cam cleat on the face of the cabin bulkhead in the cockpit. From there it runs outside the life line stanchions and forward to a block at the bow. Then it runs up to the shackle mentioned earlier. The jib hanks onto the fore stay, and the shackle attaches to the head of the jib. Near the top of the life line stanchion next to the cockpit's cabin bulkhead I bolted a small horn cleat. After the jib is hoisted, I snug up the downhaul portion of the line and secure it to this small horn cleat. The line is long enough to leave a few feet in the cockpit. Buy enough line to make sure you have enough slack in the cockpit to make hoisting and lowering easy. If the line is too short (not enough slack in the cockpit) it will be harder to work. You can always shorten a long line if you have too much in the cockpit.
  2. Where it is installed.
The lines are led from the mast and fore deck back to the cockpit. The downhaul portion runs free from the bow to the halyard shackle. DO NOT run it through the hanks. It NEEDS to run freely.
  3. Where I purchased the necessary materials.
All the line was bought at through SailNet. The shackle, pulley and small horn cleat were bought at the local West Marine. The cam cleat, turning block and deck organizer were bought through Catalina Direct.
