Single line - Double ended Reefing

This page describes:
  1. How I have my reefing line set up.
This was done by myself after a race in which I was on two long reaches. The first reach was on starboard tack and my reefing line was set up on the starboard side. It was easy to reef. Later I shook out the reef. Then on the return leg I had to reef again. This time I was on port tack and it was very time consuming and difficult to put in the reef. I decided then that when this race was over I would set up a two ended reef line so I could reef as easily on port tack as I could on starboard tack.

  2. Where it is installed.
Slow Flight is set up with single line double ended reefing. A line starts at a cam cleat at the port side of the cockpit at the cabin bulkhead. From there it runs forward through a turning block to another block at the base of the mast. Then it runs up the port side of the main and through the main's reef tack then down the starboard side of the main to a cheek block on the starboard side of the boom. From there it runs towards the aft end of the boom to another cheek block on the starboard side of the boom located slightly aft of the reef clew's most aft position. Then it runs up to the main's reef clew and out the port side and down to another cheek block on the port side of the boom directly across from the cheek block on the starboard side. From there it runs over a cheek block on the port side of the boom at the mast end of the boom and down to a turning block at the base of the mast on the starboard side of the mast plate. Then it runs back to the cockpit via another turning block on the starboard side and finally back to another cam cleat on the starboard side of the cabin bulkhead.

This isn't the standard set up, but it allows me to more easily singlehandedly reef the main from either side without spending much time (if any) on the low side of the boat. I can reef while under way on any point of sail without having to change my heading.

  3. Where I purchased the materials necessary.
I bought all the blocks and line from West Marine.
