These three pictures show the "tunes" project completed just a few weeks ago. I did not want to spend a lot of money so I decided to use an inexpensive car radio ($49) but it had all the power and features we needed. Installation was the big issue, where and how. We bought a radio installation "box" at West Marine for about $20. It fit perfectly just forward of the starboard bulkhead. The antenna is a short (19") flexible type also found at West marine. It was about $15 and mounted inside the cabin (no holes in the deck to pass an antenna cable) and it works great. All the wiring was connected to our new switch panel. Be sure to use marine wire for the power and secure wire well to prevent abrasion. The speakers are also low cost. I was looking for a speaker that was small as to not be intrusive in the cabin but had a good sound. I found what I was looking for at Radio Shack, a couple of Surround Sound Rear Satellite speakers. They were just the thing and cost about $29 each. The key is the brackets and they have you on this one, but I bought 2 and they cost about $25 each...but they were perfect for the application. I also covered the exposed speaker wire from the lead location to the speaker with that split plastic wire organizer that you can get just about anywhere. You can see it on the stbd speaker. |
